Following the Biden administration’s declaration that it will terminate Title 42, a policy aimed at regulating the influx of unprecedented amounts of illegal immigration — which is expected to result in an even larger flow of immigrants to the United States’ southern border — Republicans charged that the president was “destroying” the country with a “full-scale invasion,” predicting an “imminent migration crisis” unlike anything seen before, and some calling for impeachment.
The Trump administration invoked Title 42, a public health law that serves as a critical tool in combating the spread of COVID-19 and controlling the flood of migrants at our southern border, from the outset of the coronavirus epidemic, allowing for more rapid deportation of those who cross illegally into the United States.
In response to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recent declaration that President Joe Biden will terminate the Title 42 coronavirus protection protocol, which allows federal immigration officials to quickly return border crossers and illegal immigrants to their native nations, congressional Republicans warned of dire consequences.
Rep. Mike Johnson (R-LA) wrote, “Our southern border is already overburdened with illegal migrants and dangerous drugs. However, the Biden Administration is calling for the end of Title 42, which would make matters far worse in this unprecedented situation.”
“There is no other conclusion: This is deliberate,” he added.
“Joe Biden’s terrible border policies have allowed 2 million immigrants to enter the country illegally via the southern border,” tweeted Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. “The skyrocketing flow of illegal aliens, including drug, human and sex trafficking, will be supercharged by revoking Title 42.”
“Border Patrol agents feel neglected and abandoned,” stated House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).
“They made one thing clear: President Biden and VP Harris have failed to uphold their most basic responsibilities as protectors of our country’s sovereignty,” he continued.
“What’s going on at the border is really quite simple: well-funded, operationally smart drug cartels—with CCP help—are taking advantage of our immigration policies and migrants’ desperation to generate billions of dollars from drug and human trafficking. It has to stop,” Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN) added in a tweet.
