The White House’s newly announced Disinfo Governance Board has provoked a backlash from Republicans.
The DHS has established a new government entity to address online disinfo, particularly on certain issues such as the Ukraine war, elections, COVID-19, and the open border agenda at the United States’ southern border.
However, Republicans are concerned that the new board will seek to restrict free expression. Several GOP lawmakers have expressed outrage over Pres. Biden’s Disinformation Governance Board, with some vowing to disband it.
The creation of the new board was dubbed a “ministry of truth” by numerous Republicans, alluding to George Orwell’s dystopian novel “1984.”
“The same party that spent years pushing the Russia collusion lie, suppressed the Hunter Biden laptop tale, and compared parents to assassins now believe it has a right to control your speech,” House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) added. “Biden must immediately withdraw his proposal for a Ministry of Truth.”
“DEFUND Biden’s Ministry of Truth!” Congressman Lee Zeldin (R-N.Y.) said. “This isn’t Cuba, North Korea, or Iran. This is the United States, where we do not need biased political hacks to gaslight the rest of our nation on whatever they decide to declare true or false.”
“I don’t think people are fully grasping the significance of a DHS-run Ministry of Truth. Lauren Boebert, a Colorado representative, stated, This is Stalinism. This is Maoism. This is where you die.”
Mr. Boebert also introduced legislation to eliminate the DHS’ Disinformation Governance Board.
“It’s terrifying. We have the ability to end funding in Congress. It is our responsibility to immediately terminate this department and defund it,” Boebert added on Fox News. “I’m urging leadership within the GOP —McCarthy, Scalise, and others — to join me in calling for the closure and defunding of this dept.”
Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida has vowed to “fight back” against Biden’s Disinformation Governance Board, which he believed was a “late April Fool’s joke” at first.
“They’re going to establish, the DHS, a bureau of misinformation,” DeSantis said during his weekly news conference this week. “It’s essentially a ministry of truth.”
