Despite California’s state-funded travel ban to the state because of its conservative social policies, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) is vacationing in Montana on a personal basis.
CalMatters reporter Emily Hoeven initially reported Newsom’s vacation, noting that his office had not announced his destination before the trip, as it generally does.
The Fox News Channel, meanwhile, verified that Newsom was currently in Montana, where his wife’s family owns a ranch. They were married at the property in 2008.
California placed a travel restriction on Montana in 2021 after the state passed legislation to protect women’s sports from males that was competing as transgender women. California Attorney General Rob Bonta stated:
“Montana has been added to California’s list of state-sponsored travel restrictions as a result of Senate Bill 215 and house Bill 112. On May 7, 2015, the House Bill 112 banning transgender girls and women from playing in school sports according to their gender identity was signed into law. Senate Bill 215, which was signed into law on April 22, overturns existing state and local laws and policies that discriminate against LGBTQ+ people. It threatens to allow businesses to refuse a wide range of services to same-sex couples based only on their sexual orientation. Montana will be added to California’s travel restrictions list on July 1, 2021, as part of AB 1887.”
According to Hoeven, 22 states are on California’s prohibited list.
According to the California governor’s office, Mr. Newsom was not in violation of the travel ban because his trip was for personal reasons. When asked if any state funds were being used to provide Governor Newsom with security and other support while on his trip, however, the governor’s office refused to respond.
Newsom has a history of disregarding his own regulations. He was photographed while having dinner with lobbyists and friends at the French restaurant in Napa after he imposed Covid rules on other counties’ restaurants in November 2020.
Despite a city-wide mask ban for large gatherings, he removed his mask at SoFi Stadium in the middle of the NFC championship game earlier this year to take pictures.
