Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) stated that he doesn’t think Gov. DeSantis would go against former Pres. Trump in a 2024 Republican presidential primary if Trump decides to run.
“I believe that’s extremely unlikely,” Gaetz stated when he was asked if Gov. DeSantis would challenge Trump in his view.
The fact that Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) dismissed the prospect of a Trump-vs-DeSantis primary is highly significant since he is quite close with both of the party leaders—perhaps even more than any other prominent Republican figure, which Gaetz made clear when making this argument.
Gaetz said that instead of DeSantis opposing Trump as some people within the donor class have attempted to push, they are, in fact, on the same side. “I believe Trump will run for president again in 2024 and Congressman DeSantis will seek election in a 2028 or later presidential campaign.”
“What I can say is that these two individuals are on the same side. We would like to see a GOP that is a nationwide party, a winning party and a fighting force. I believe President Trump takes great pride in DeSantis’ success, and he nurtured the leadership skills that he has shown the rest of the world. It’s an excellent partnership. I believe it’s mostly a media creation wanting to find ways to create divisions and conflicts in our movement. My guess is that both of them will be back in the oval office at some point. I think Trump will most likely be re-elected in 2024, but for a lot of years, I’ve predicted that Ron DeSantis will one day be president.”
“I do think it’s highly unlikely that DeSantis would challenge Trump,” added Gaetz. “The Florida governor will observe the “magnetism and energy” Donald Trump has with his base and national GOP voters, and he’ll choose to stick with him for now rather than compete against him—then run within an open field in a later election.”
“I think if Trump runs, and I do believe he will, Ron DeSantis will know the charisma and energy that President Trump has, and he’ll almost certainly do what he’s always done, which is to be one of Mr.Trump’s best campaigners and surrogates. Look, there’s a reason we won Florida by such a large margin in the 2020 election for Donald Trump—a margin that no one else has ever seen in Florida—and it was because they were campaigning together hand in glove.”
