A large group immigration activists walked out on Biden team members during a virtual meeting, protesting the White House’s plans to reinstate Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy.
“I cannot take another meeting with them as they pretend,” said Ariana Saludares, who is an activist in the Colores United group, who went to the Saturday virtual meeting. “They award us on the outside, but on the inside, we are having to take the knives out of our backs.”
The activists asked for some time before the meeting with top Biden team members, like DHS officials and Esther Olavarria from the Domestic Policy Council. They read a comment saying the Biden White House is “playing politics with human lives” and said the group could no longer have “these discussions with good conscience.”
“We are now sadly at a turning point,” they announced.
The activists then exited the meeting, Politico said.
The Dept. of Homeland Security said it is time to reinstate Trump’s “Remain in Mexico” policy by November after a court order was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.
“The Biden White House has been very obvious that MPP was not a policy we accept. That is why the Dept. of Homeland Security then appealed the court ruling once this was ordered,” the Biden Administration said to Politico, adding that the White House must comply with the law as the DHS works on another plan to stop the Remain in Mexico policy.
Tensions between the Biden team and far-left activists have been going up in recent months. Politico reported that these activists feel that Biden’s immigration decisions are about politics and Democrats see the border as a possibly toxic problem for the Democratic Party.
“I believe they are scared of the backlash from conservatives, and we will continue to remind them that a backlash will happen regardless of what they decide,” Luis Guerra, an officer at the Catholic Legal Immigration Network who was at the meeting Saturday, said to Politico. “We don’t actually believe they are doing everything they can to actually bring back asylum at the border, the way they say they are.”
